UNITED STATES DISTRICT JUDGE LAWRENCE K. KARLTON

May 28, 1935 - July 11, 2015

In Memoriam

Retired United States District Judge Lawrence K. Karlton passed away at his home on July 11, 2015. He was appointed to this court by President Carter on June 5, 1979, and later served as our Chief Judge from 1983 to 1990. He was Chief Judge Emeritus until he took senior status on May 28, 2000. Judge Karlton continued to maintain an active caseload until his retirement in September of last year. He was the longest serving judge on our court. Throughout his almost 35 years on our court, Judge Karlton was an imposing but fair jurist to those who appeared before him, a mentor to those who worked for him, and a friend to those who worked alongside of him. His influence upon the law and upon the lives of the people he touched will be felt for many years to come. He will always be fondly remembered by all of us who had the privilege of calling him a colleague.

Please see the Obituary in the Sacramento Bee.
