The Supreme Court Connection

Associate Justice Anthony M. Kennedy is the only Justice to have been appointed to the United States Supreme Court from the Eastern District of California. However, before the district was created in 1966, there were two Justices appointed from the territory which now forms the district. The first was Stephen J. Field, a Marysville, California lawyer, who had served on the California Supreme Court in Sacramento, before he was appointed to the United States Supreme Court by President Abraham Lincoln. The second was Earl Warren, who was raised in Bakersfield, California and resided in the Governor's Mansion at 16th and H Streets in Sacramento before being appointed Chief Justice of the United States by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
